MOVIE REVIEW: THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS

The Pursuit of Happiness is one of the most inspiring movies ever produced. It is based on a true rags-to-riches story. Cristopher Gardner, played by Will Smith, is a talented young African American. Along with his wife and child, he has many dreams to accomplish. Unfortunately, his dreams fade after a series of circumstances leave him unemployed. To make matters worse, his wife leaves him and his son because of their financial problems. Without his wife’s aid, he and his son are reduced to poverty and homelessness. From then on, their daily agenda was to wander through soup kitchens and seek shelter in any way they can. His poverty was so intense that he and his son had to sleep in a sub-way bathroom. With nothing left but his son, he is determined to do whatever it takes to provide some stability for his child. One day, he is introduced to the stock and bond market. Then, realized that there is a way to bring his life together: to become a stockbroker. He becomes a trainee for a prestigious firm. He is warned that only one candidate would be selected as a full-time employee, a stockbroker. Amazingly, he rises through the ranks of his training and he earns his managers’ trust. Eventually, his resourcefulness and determination pays off: he becomes a stockbroker. He achieved his happiness: to give his son financial stability.

I believe there are two factors that led to Cristopher Gardner’s success. First, he is the exemplar of persistence. Persistence is.....

i wanted to watch this movie even before it came out in the theaters.. because of too much school work and other extra curricular stuff i wasn't able to.. now i'm actually thinking of setting these activities aside.. this post made me realize that the movie is worth more than 2 hours of your time.... it will help you become more optimistic and goal-oriented.. i need that

My sister and I watched this movie when on a plane to the US in 2006. She cried during Chris Gardner's ordeals. At the end of the film, she cried even more! I felt euphoric after watching it. Sometimes, I think it's important to think more of our goal rather how will make it there.

Hi pessimist. I was once a pessimist too, until I watched the Pursuit of Happiness and The Secret. I realized that we are not born to think negative thoughts. I believe that being an optimist or pessimist is not a state of mind. Rather, these are the results of our habits. So the more you think of happy thoughts, the easier it becomes to be an optimist. Cheers!

thanks for the tip sean! :) i like that... 'we are not born to be pessimists'.. that makes sense because we are created to be good bec of our human dignity.. :) maybe i should start thinking of my goals rather than how i will achieve them because the latter makes me even more frustrated.. i think this will make me more of an optimist :)

Pessimist and hopeless, there are so many things to smile about. In the morning, while brushing your teeth, think of 8things you are thankful for. Soon, you will realize that it is a matter of choice. A matter of perspective. It really is whether the glass is half-empty or half-full :)
