Viktor Fankl: True Happiness Comes From Within

Viktor Frankl a Jewish psychologist. He was a survivor of the Nazi prison camps during WWII. The Nazis arrested him and his wife. He, along with his family and his wife, was taken to a prison camp. He suffered many forms of torture, never knowing when he would be brought to gas chamber to have an inhumane death. He endured many indignities: he was shaved bald, and stripped of his clothes and of his gold teeth. One day, while naked and alone in a small room, he began to contemplate about his life. He realized that his Nazi captors could control his environment, do whatever they want with his body, and even take his life. But despite these, there is one thing the Nazis could never control or take away from him: man’s free will. He later called this, “the last of human freedoms.” By being self-aware, he had the power within himself to choose how to respond to all his captors’ actions anytime and anywhere.

The Nazis may have had more options to choose from in the environment, but he had more internal power to exercise his options. Despite the camp’s inhumane condition and the Nazi’s brutality, he became the happiest man in the prison camp. From this mindset, he helped his prison mates find meaning in their suffering and dignity during their horrific experience in the prison camps. Consequently, he became an inspiration to those around him, including some of the guards! When the war ended, he discovered that his entire family, except his sister, was sent to the gas chamber. He never saw his wife again. Nonetheless, he chose to be happy by sharing his experience in his book, Man’s Search for Meaning, with the rest of the world. Thanks to man’s free will, it is man’s choice to be happy.

MEET CHU

My friends’ first impressions of me usually are: “snob, masungit, goodie goodie, demure, etc”. But I tell you, looks can be pretty deceiving. Demure? Goodie goodie? Hell no. I’m a fighter. I’ve always been. “A woman who thirsts for adrenaline”; may it be in sports or in life. I love a challenge. When I want something I would most probably get it. When it comes to problems, I’m all for it. My friends think I’m weird just because I don’t react or panic much when bad things happen to me. I didn’t panic when I found out I wasn’t enrolled in one of my subjects after taking it or when I lost my phone or when I’ve only been starting on my 10 page paper the day of submission. It’s not because I’m not human. It’s just that I prefer redirecting my time and efforts in dealing with the problem. I respond really well with emergencies: what would you do when you saw your friend’s house burning? Do you fight or flee?

Well, I fought the fire and luckily, we were able to extinguish it just in time. I love that adrenaline. Though sometimes, there are limits to wishing for something bad to happen just to test yourself. Well, that thing called karma came back for me, just now. I’m facing the most difficult problem I’ve ever had to face. I’ve been so afraid of facing it. I keep on dismissing it hoping that it would go away. But it can’t. None of my friends know this because I don’t want them to make me realize how big this problem is. So I’m giving you the chance to be the first ones to know… my secret. I’ve always thought that I had all the time in the world to fix my relationship with a certain person. But now, I found out that this time I have is slowly slipping away. This love one of mine… is dying… But I thank this blog for teaching me how to face this fear… I can’t share happiness if I keep on running from mine… I’ve also learned to always look on the bright side of everything (how cheesy it may sound, but it has helped me deal with my problem): to think about the positive things. So now, im just thinking that this person is not leaving me… he just went ahead… to a greater place. I’ve slowly been facing my fear and spending more time with this person. So, thank you my fellow bloggers and readers for making me a better person. Share happiness!

MEET MADY

Who is Mady Asis? This is a question that has been answered many times. I had been in a lot of instances where I have to introduce myself and say something about me. But this time, I think it is different. I have to introduce myself and say something about me to someone or people I had never seen before. So I have to do a good job in introducing myself to you guys.

I am the person who believes in the saying “what you don’t remember did not happen”. Maybe this is because I love to hangout with friends, partying and drinking till the sun rises. So some of my nights are filled with adventures that when I’m sober the next day, I won’t remember and my friends are just going to say the things I did. Of course, I will deny some of it but who knows, coz for me if I don’t remember it means it did not happen.

I am the person whom you can call or say “Chill lang”. I’m a relaxed type of person and who loves to enjoy things and especially life. I love adventures and spending time with my friends. My hobby is simply having fun. I always try to fight boredom. It’s like I just always have to do something. But after all the fun and sleepless nights of adventure, that is the time when I would regain my strength by sleeping all day. My record is 15 hrs straight of sleep. I am also an active person. I love sports, which is why I play futsal and badminton. Also, I just love dancing and music. It keeps me alive and my blood flowing. But, I also have something that I take seriously, which is my family and relationship with friends. I value the special bond we have and care a great deal about them.

My life, for me, is just simply perfect. Although trials come but I know and believe that everything will pass and I can be happy again.

MEET KRISTEN

Back in high school, I was reading through glossies and on this page of the magazine was a feature on horoscopes. Out of curiosity, I flipped through Gemini, my zodiac sign, and looked at how I was described. The Gemini girl was portrayed through a picture of a young woman in glasses in her sleek coat who seemed to be walking briskly while she had her gadget on her right hand and held shopping bags on the left.

Several years later, I found myself astigmatic, needing to wear frames, on a shopping spree with my PDA-phone (my phone then) while texting away as I enjoyed the benefits of UNLITXT (A local telco's promo of unlimited SMS-ing given a standard rate instead of the usual per SMS Peso rate).

Fast-forward to today, I am needing to write a sort of description of myself. It is tempting to just copy that or get a "what's-in-a-name" description from Google.

Okay, okay. Bad idea. Honestly, I don't think that just because I'm a Gemini, I am meant to be an astigmatic who would wear a nice coat as she was lugging around in shopping bags with an aching thumb from too much texting. Right?

Right. That description is too stereotypical. Besides, who we are is dictated by who we ought to be. Stars and stereotypes aside, I've always seen life as something that is meant to be beautiful. Wherever life takes us, whatever we make happen, it will always be something wonderful. It's ought to be that way. We ought to take part in the beauty of life. It’s a matter of choice, a matter of perspective.

I may be speechless in giving apt adjectives to describe myself but I do know how this blog has given more than I expected. I never knew how powerful blogging can be until I've come to realize how Web 2.0 can be a catalyst for happiness. It brought my heart warm feelings each time I heard how our blog has made someone happy. And at this moment, all I can say about myself is that I am happy to make people happy. That way, they also see that really, life is beautiful even in the most unexpected instances.

MEET KIT

Hi. My name is Mariquit, but most of you know me as Kit from my posts. Well, i was born and raised in California and moved to the Philippines 7 years ago. It's been a wild ride. I love art and world culture. I guess it's from growing up around so many different ones that i've become acustomed to them all. My neighbors were from Afganistan and at my school there were students from all over, who belived different things. I guess that's why i like having an open mind. I like helping people out. I'm a good listener. I think i can credit that to being the eldest of 8 kids. It can get crazy at home that's why you have to listen well enough to everything that's going on to get anywhere. I have a huge family but i love it because no matter how bad things get i always have them to back me up.

Meet SEAN

Hello fellow optimists! I’m Sean General. For me, life is an adventure. I love to travel. I’ve been to four continents so far. I like visiting places that are of historical significance. The Great Wall of China and the Great Pyramid in Egypt are such amazing sites! They’re huge! Trying foreign food in different countries is such a thrill. My tongue screams when I try to eat authentic Thai dishes though. I also like to observe the native people’s culture. I find Singaporeans a bit stiff though while Australians are very warm people.

One of the best experiences I’ve had was...

MEET MM

I remember when I was in elementary, my English teachers always asked us to write an autobiography. That’s like the basic paper you’ll ever write. I always start my essay this way “My name is MM Donato and I was born in November 18, 1987.” Now I realized that when you’re introducing yourself to someone you don’t exactly mention your birthday after you’ve said your name. I bet my name is not familiar to many of you because I don’t post personal blogs that often. If you click the “About Us” tab, you’ll find that I’m in charge of promoting this blog although I’m not really sure if I was able to accomplish that job. Honestly, I’m more than happy to be assigned in promotions because I’m not a good writer. Right now, I’m struggling writing this blog. Actually, come to think of it, I’m not really good at anything. I’m not being humble or unflattering myself but that’s how I see myself. Most of my acquaintances will probably remember me as the girl who plays tennis or the girl who has a big crush on Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter). Or perhaps most of them will remember me as the girl who has the strongest personality...
